<image:title>About Us - How It Started</image:title>
<image:caption>People often ask us why we started breeding the Mastador puppy. We had two Labradors early on in our relationship and we lost both of them far to young to genetic cancers. It was truly devastating to us to lose our family friends far to early. As our hearts broke after the loss of Kea and Coal (within a four months of each other), we decided we wanted a mixed breed. One that has not been line bred and carried a stronger genetic chance of a longer life. At first we wanted the Labrottie (Lab x Rottweiler mix), but when Mark saw the Mastador, his heart was set. We interviewed all the major breeders in the U.S., and ultimately decided Bruce was the kind of guy we would want a dog from. Our friendship took a quick launch, and the idea of breeding the pup on the West Coast would be a fun idea. And that’s how we got started. Kane, KlaraBelle, and Zena have all come through Bruce. Not all from the same lines, but in connection with Bruce. We are grateful to him for his mentorship, friendship, and genuine nature. We believe deeply in this beautiful breed. We believe it’s a dog worth sharing to the world, and we enjoy establishing ourselves as a reputable breeder serving families primarily on the West Coast. Our dogs are our pets and family first, and breeding dogs secondarily. We hope you enjoy this site, and if getting a puppy from our farm is something you desire, we look forward to connecting with you. Mark and Lea McCullough</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Services - Genetic Testing</image:title>
<image:caption>Our breeding dogs are all tested for over 169 genetic issues to insure compatibility and limit the chance of inherited problems showing up later in life. Hybid (cross-breed) dogs are generally much less less susceptible to the genetic problems of the foundation breeds, as their gene pool has been expanded and the hereditary problems diluted. But genetic testing will help make certain that problems are not carried forward and multiplied. Chieftan Kane, KlaraBelle and Zena have all been genetically tested and 100% clear of all breed, and non-breed specific genetic mutations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Services - Vet Supervision</image:title>
<image:caption>We work with a local veterinarian who gives our pups a complete examination at about 6 weeks. We do not allow the pups to be released for sale until they are eight weeks old. Studies have shown that staying with their mom the extra two weeks after they reach six weeks is important for both health and socialization. We also use “WhelpWise”, which is a remote-vet service that allows us to have 24/7 access to veterinarians who understand the whelping process. We are provided with a Doppler heart monitor as well as a contraction monitor to help us monitor the puppies health the week prior to birth, and they are on standby to help us through the actual whelping process. Your puppy is guaranteed to be healthy and up-to-date on shots and worming when you purchase with us, regardless of its age. You will receive a Health Record detailing the shots and worming schedule, and the puppy's diet at the time of sale.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Services - Lifetime Support</image:title>
<image:caption>We offer lifetime support for every puppy that comes from McCullough Mastadors. That is most easily accomplished via Facebook, but we will deliver that support however it is needed. We help with advice on diet and health issues, behavior, training and whatever else you might need, to the best of our ability, and will offer resources to answer your questions, and recommend products to address health and dietary questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Services - Lifetime Rehoming Policy</image:title>
<image:caption>We realize that there are times when circumstances force a family to give up their pets. We do not ever want one of our puppies or dogs to end up in a shelter, a dog pound, or just abandoned. If such an emergency arises, we will always help you to rehome your dog. In addition, we microchip our puppies before they leave the farm and we are listed as an alternative contact, after the owner of course, as a means to get ahold of the breeder if the dog falls into a bad situation. We require that you contact us first before re-homing your dog or puppy yourself. We have a large network of families on Facebook, and we will help you find a suitable home and family situation for your dog. We only want the best for our pups and feel very committed to life long support in a healthy and happy environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Services - Health Guarantee</image:title>
<image:caption>We guarantee our pups to be free of life-threatening or life-shortening genetic defects up to three years from the whelping date, and guarantee hip and elbow soundness for 3 years as well. A diagnosis of moderate to severe hip dysplasia must be made by a licensed veterinary orthopaedist. Mild subluxation is relatively commonplace in large breeds, is easily manageable, and is not covered under this guarantee. This part of the guarantee is null and void if your dog has been spayed or neutered before 24 months of age. If your puppy is found to have any life-threatening or life-shortening genetic defect, we will be happy to refund all of the purchase price of the puppy upon certification of spay/neuter (if over 24 months of age) and an affidavit stating that the dog has not been bred. The other alternative for refund is upon the return of the dog. Any genetic defect claims must be accompanied by test results from a licensed veterinarian or animal hospital, and only after our consultation with that vet. Also included is a guarantee that your puppy is healthy when you take delivery. You must have the puppy vet-checked within 7 days of taking delivery. If your puppy is found to be sick with any of the major canine diseases that are vaccinated for, your money will be refunded, and you may keep the puppy or bring it back, as you wish. We will not reimburse any veterinarian bills incurred by the treatment of the sickness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Dogs - Chieftan Kane</image:title>
<image:caption>Our primary sire, Chieftan Kane, is a F1 Mastador bred in Wisconson. His mom was a Fawn AKC English Mastiff, and his dad was a large Chocolate AKC Labrador Retriever. More lab than mastiff in personality, Kane is goofy, loving, cuddly, ball seeking, and playful young man. Currently at 140 lbs, Kane stamps his babies with playful and guardian like personality, and big blocky heads. Kane is primarily black, but certainly has a under coat of a coca-cola color. His offspring can throw the same color of black and dark chocolate as they mature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Dogs - KlaraBelle</image:title>
<image:caption>KlaraBelle is a beautiful Apricot Mastador from our friends at Covenant Farms in Virginia. KlaraBelle is a F2 Mastador and registered with the IDCR and a true 50/50 mix. Her sire is Charlamagne, and her mama is Lorna Doone, both from Bruce’s dogs at Covenant Farms. Her puppies are 3rd Generation mastadors, all registered with IDCR as well. KlaraBelle is a loving, cuddly, leaning, athletic and playful lady. She traditionally has litters of nine pups with a fairly even split. Her puppies can be anything from tri-colored, apricot, fawn, chocolate or black. She has very colorful litters, but their personalities are all amazing! KlaraBelle’s Fall 2021 litter list is currently full.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Dogs - Zena Peanut</image:title>
<image:caption>Zena is stunning and fun multi-colored Mastador bred also at Covenant Farms in Virginia. Her daddy is Charlemagne and her mom is Annabelle both from Covenant Farms. Zena’s genetic colors show she has cream, tan, chocolate and black in her coat. She has a unique feature where the top of her coat is black and her undercoat is tan and cream. We always remark how soft and thick her coat is, and she loves to be out in the weather, play in water, and frolic on the farm. She has the perfect balance of mastiff and lab, in that she is fun and water loving, but large and guardian like in her personality. She loves her humans, and maturing beautifully. We expect her first litter in late Fall or early Winter 2021. Zena’s waiting list is currently full for 2021.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Dogs - Zeus “The Naughty Rottie”</image:title>
<image:caption>Zeus is obviously not part of our breeding program, but he is part of our family at Chalice Farms. Zeus is 6 years old, and a fan favorite at our farm. His very kind nature is proof that not all Rottweilers are aggressive — this guy wouldn’t hurt a fly. While you couldn’t get past Kane at the front door, this guy would probably hand you the keys. Zeus is a rock-rolling independent dude, who is famous for keeping all deer, coyote, bunnies and squirrels off the property. Humans can stay, wildlife must go. We love this dude very much, and was the inspiration behind picking our Zena Peanut. In fact, Zena means “belonging to Zeus”, which is also the inspiration for her name.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Titan-Tobias or Tobi for short! This was the only black male we had in the litter and is already showing Kane-like traits! Check out the mastiff bump on his nose, and the broadening facial traits already. This dude was voted by his litter mates most likely to be a football star He’s tough, he’s resilient, he’s active and he’s always leading the pack!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ahhhhhh..... how many of you have been waiting for this one??? This guys was our first born this litter, and has so many fun features! Meet BEAR! This dude is utterly fascinating to me. He was born big, quiet, humble and shy — but with the coolest of markings! Bear spent the first 7 weeks not being very engaging, sleeping a lot and getting references to the “hibernating grizzly”! Then he woke up, and has been running ever since. This dude was voted by his litter mates to most likely become a Sumo Wrestler! (Duh!) His kind and loving nature will always make him lovable, but I doubt he will ever be really challenged.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This girl stole my heart from the moment she was born. Most pups are born in a sack, and we have a process of bringing them into this world. Not this one .... she flew out like she was on a slip ‘n’ slide! Meet Luna! Luna is my introverted empath that FEELS the energy of the pack. She appreciates her alone time and loves the puppy pile when it’s nap time. She is voted most likely by her litter mates to be a Head Librarian when she grows up because she is wicked intelligent, painfully shy, and would love to say SHHHHHH ... to anyone who brings chaos to her space.</image:caption>

When we would be out in the puppy play pen together, he would do zoomies around the yard, but always swing by for a drive by kiss! He has a strong connection and bond to positive energy. <image:caption>Let me introduce you to the lovely Fiona! This beautiful lady happens to be our only fawn girl, and the largest lady in the litter! She is the same size as BEAR, who I will be profiling soon as well. Fiona is the perfect blend of rough ‘n’ tough & sweet ‘n’ sassy! She had phenomenal presence, knows her worth, has super confidence but still enjoys a cuddle in your lap. This girl will likely reach 100+ lbs and I have know doubt will own the neighborhood. She was voted by her litter mates most likely be the Head Coach of a sporting team. She is tough enough to put the boys in their place, smart enough to be strategic and compassionate enough to know how to use the players to the best of their abilities. <image:title>Reserve Your Puppy - Prior To Deposit</image:title>
<image:caption>We do not have a questionnaire or a contract. But before we put you on a waiting list, we have a few questions we need to ask, just to make sure our puppies are a good fit with your family. The most important one has to do with your daily routine. Is there a person or another dog that is home all day during the day? We have a strict policy that we do not sell a puppy into a home where he or she will be left alone for several hours each day. They must have either human or dog companionship during the day. Mastadors are very social dogs, and puppies especially. They are babies, and simply cannot be left alone for hours at a time. We'd be happy to explain that policy in detail over the phone. There are no exceptions made for this rule.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Reserve Your Puppy - Picking Your Puppy</image:title>
<image:caption>We take photos at birth and at 2-3 weeks when eyes are opened. Lea is also quite good at posting videos and being very present on social media with the pups. At four weeks old, we have each of the puppies identified with a colored collar, and the photo set has four pictures per puppy, and folks can start making their picks at that point. The pick order is determined by your position on the waiting list, as explained above. Another photo set is done at 6 weeks, so you can watch your pup develop. If you want to come here to pick your puppy, you can do that. But the pups cannot be handled until they are 6 weeks old and vaccinated. Before then, you can come see them, we will hold each one up close for you to see, you can watch them interact with us and with each other, and meet the parents, you just can't handle them. The policy is there to protect the puppies in the entire litter. I encourage folks to make their picks as soon after the 4-week-old photos come out as possible, because there will be other families that cannot make their pick until you make yours. If you have any other questions, feel free to call or write.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reserve Your Puppy - Interview and Deposits</image:title>
<image:caption>It starts with an interview with Lea or Mark at the farm. We like to “meet” our families before we select them for our litter of puppies. Once you have been approved through a phone interview, you are placed on the list. Once the litter is born, and we can see the gender split of the puppies, Lea will start to contact those on the list in order of how you were placed on the list. At that time we require a $200 deposit to reserve a puppy. This deposit is non-refundable (except in the case that the puppy you reserved becomes unavailable through sickness, death or injury). We do not accept deposits before a litter is born, but we maintain a waiting list for each litter. The waiting list does not guarantee you will get a puppy. It only guarantees that you will have an opportunity to place a deposit before the general public does, and it also determines where you are in line for your pick of a puppy. Once the litter is born, and we see how many males and females there are, the folks on the list get 48 hours to respond to the announcement and make their deposits before we open it to the public. It's likely that some folks will end up disappointed because there are not enough of one sex or the other for everybody that wanted them. So, sometimes your position on the list can change (for the better) based on that.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Mastador Breed - Color</image:title>
<image:caption>F1 Mastadors (Mastiff x Lab) turn out black nearly 90% of the time. This is because most color genes are recessive, and require the color to exist in both parents in order to show up in offspring. The result is that most F1 Mastadors revert to Lab-dominant black color. There are exceptions, however, which cannot be readily explained by color genetics. Chocolate and yellow Mastadors will appear when the chocolate or the yellow (both recessive genes) show up on both Lab sides of both parents. But if one parent carries Lab yellow, and one parent carries Lab chocolate, they will cancel each other out and produce black. However, most F2 (2nd generation) Mastadors will produce the common Mastiff colors of fawn (light yellow or off-white) and apricot (various shades of red). When breeding in the 2nd and third generations, you may find a wide variety of colors, some which are Lab colors, and some which are Mastiff colors. Chocolate, yellow and black are all Mastador colors, as well as various shades of fawn (off-white/cream), apricot (red), along with brindles (stripes) some that have dark stripes with apricot, and some that have dark stripes with fawn, and also reverse brindle, in which the dominant color is either apricot or fawn, and the secondary color is the dark sable/brown. We have also seen black & tan in many litters, and black pups that have brindle sox or even their whole legs. Most Mastadors of color have black masks, but not all. Many that favor the Lab colors do not have the black mask. There is a look and a color for everybody in Mastadors!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Mastador Breed - Tempermant</image:title>
<image:caption>English Mastiffs are a guardian breed, and therefore Mastadors are as well. It is very important (especially during the first 18 months life) that they are well-socialized with people and animals outside of your own household. Failure to do that could result in overly-protective behaviors starting to show up between 10-18 months of age (essentially puberty). This is more common in males than females, but can show up in both. This is correctable with professional training, but as the old saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As both breeds are known to be diggers and chewers, there is a strong likelihood that you will need to train that behavior out of your puppy in the early going. Some pups are worse than others. Sometimes it is just cute. Sometimes, it can be expensive and destructive if not trained away early in life. Aggression: If you see first signs of aggressive behavior, do not wait, hoping that it will disappear! It likely will not, until you deal with it. There are three methods of behavioral modification that we have found to be generally effective at the early signs of aggression. 1. Get a spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle and fill it with water. When your dog starts to show a sign they will act out, spray the water directly in their face with a medium spray (not a stream), along with your stern verbal correction. Keep the bottle handy and be consistent to use it *every* time your dog shows signs of acting aggressively. After a short time, he will likely stop right away when he hears your verbal command, and sees you reach for the bottle. This method will work for most other unwanted behaviors as well. 2. If the above does not deter your dog, use a 3:1 ratio of water to distilled white vinegar. It will be an astringent to the eyes, but it is totally harmless. It will sting, and it will get his attention. 3. If the spray bottle techniques don't work, you may need to try an electronic collar. These have a wide range of training modes, from various levels of sound, to various level of electronic "buzz". There are several brands, and all of them offer training videos online. In fact, there are many training videos for e-collar training, that are not associated with any product, but were produced by professional trainers. If you continue to need assistance with this problem, we will offer referrals to trainers experienced with aggression issues.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Mastador Breed - Health & Lifespan</image:title>
<image:caption>Health and lifespan have a number of contributing factors, other than the genetic predispositions of the foundation breeds. Just like in the case of people, quality of diet and healthcare are major factors. Let me start out by saying that if you do everything right in that regard, there is no reason why your Mastador should not live 13+ years. Obviously, things show up, just like they do in us, that cannot be predicted, but as a general rule this should be true. This lifespan is dependant on two major factors. The first is diet. You must feed your dog a diet that is free of corn, wheat and soy, as the three biggest culprits. Raw feeding is by far the best alternative, but can be expensive and time-consuming to prepare. Raw food can be obtained on-line and shipped to your door. The second important factor is that you should never get your dog spayed or neutered before they reach full maturity. For Mastadors, this is on average 24 months. The sex hormones are responsible for bone density and sound joint development, and robbing your pup of that before his or her growth plates close dramatically increases the risk of early hip dysplasia, joint failures, and three different types of cancer.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Mastador Breed - Size</image:title>
<image:caption>First generation (F1) Mastadors tend to be the largest, with males often in the 130-140 lb. range, and sometimes as big as 170 lbs. F1B Mastadors, where the dominant breed is the English Mastiff (75%) also tend to that larger size. Females can be as small as 75 lbs, or as large as 130 lbs., depending on the size of the parents. In any litter of Mastadors, you can find pups that favor one side of their genetics over another.</image:caption>
